"I enjoy the challenge of expressing my emotional response to arrangements of everyday objects or to the natural world, creating a balanced design using bold color, expressive line, flattened perspective, decorative pattern, and layout that is expressive and exuberant - and not necessarily realistic. I use white space to create sparkle and movement."

Artist's StatementI am a fine artist living and working in the Boston area. I focus on acrylic painting, mixed media collage, and small watercolors. My style is bold, colorful, and expressive.
I grew up in the beautiful seaside town of Marblehead, Mass., north of Boston, drinking in the ocean breezes and the bright, sparkling colors of nature. Sunlight-bright colors and the rhythms of the sea infuse my work to this day. I've had the impulse to draw and paint from earliest memory. Discovering a love of the Fauves and other early-20th century artists, followed by heavy involvement with silkscreen printmaking, I began my experimentation with using strong color, sinuous line, and flattened perspective and surface treatment. In my recent mixed media collages, I have added a new dimension - texture - to the sensory experience of the works. I have worked as an assistant to the textile designer "Katja of Sweden" (Katja Geiger - high-end printed apparel and linens) and as a textile designer for several women's sportswear manufacturers. I work primarily with acrylic paint, mixed-media collage, and watercolor. These media lend themselves to the application of an array of different textures and techniques. My major subjects are still life, land- and seascapes, the human form, and recently abstracts. I think of the objects I have collected to populate my still lifes as characters or models, and I try to bring life to their stillness. I enjoy the challenge of expressing my emotional response to arrangements of everyday objects or to the natural world, creating a balanced design using bold color, expressive line, flattened perspective, decorative pattern, and layout that is expressive and exuberant - and not necessarily realistic. I use white space to create sparkle and movement. My recent mixed-media collages have taken me in a new direction, freeing me from "the object" and allowing me to explore the freedom of abstraction. As you visit this site, I hope you will experience joy, energy, and a whimsical look at the world. |
